    1. open Terminal
    2. type   gksudo nautilus in terminal

    3. file browser will open
    4. right click and select properties

    5.  select permissions from the pop up windows menu

    6. change the permissions and click apply permissions to the enclosed files  and close

    its working for ubuntu 8.04 to 12.04 and Linux mint
